Stickers & Patches
If I had a dollar for every copy of a sticker or patch I designed, I would have retired years ago. I started drawing for fun as a small child. In my teen years it became an obsession. In my late teens, I could have (should have) started a business designing and selling stickers and patches. Instead, I gave the art away...
I still do, even though I technically hold intellectual property rights to the designs. I never pursued payment. It was considered (at the time, anyway) an honor to be asked to design a new patch or sticker, or art work for a fundraiser at chuch, work, or school. Never did I realize (until MUCH later) that these small items could be a long term source of revenue. I have given away more than most, but probably less than some. The art that went to auction to help a friend raise money for medical bills, the art donated to church to decorate walls and pay the mortgage, the patches worn by hundreds of personnel in law enforcement and fire departments, the paintings created to raise funds for charitable causes all share one thing in common; my gift.
I hope these examples inspire other artists to give of their talents. Not everything needs to line your pocket; it needs to mend your heart.
